Artist Statement

My Artwork is not about a particular subject or theme. Using a very limited palette and the use of line, colour, composition and texture in my various works, I'm able to achieve the harmony. It is not necessary for any explanation as the emotion of the artwork is what I want the viewer to experience.

About Me

Informed by his beautiful natural surroundings of the rugged South Island of New Zealand, Roger started drawing at a young age in his Grandparents living room. Self taught and with no formal training, he's always had a very keen interest in the creative form, experimenting with colour and shape.

His preferred medium is oil paint on either canvas or MDF board, but also likes to use a felt tip pen for drawing and has recently been working on other creative outlets via sculpture in clay.

Roger also sees inspiration from other artists and sculptors, but doesn't have a favourite, as doesn't want to be too heavily influenced by one or another.

He judges his finished work by asking himself "Would I hang this on my walls in my home?" and if the answer is "no" it's rejected and painted over.

Some of Roger's paintings take weeks and even months to complete, and he has several paintings on the go at any one time as they begin to evolve.

"Why do two colours put next to each other sing? Can one really explain this? No. Just as one can never learn how to paint."
